About HCFarm

Who We Are   Hi, we're Landis and Steven Spickerman and have been farming here in northern Wisconsin's Penokee hills since 1993. Our 140 acre farm is certified organic and we believe strongly that organic certification not only insures our products are safe and of the highest quality for our customers, but that it also makes us better farmers and stewards of our land.

Positive Change   Our farm's core mission is to create positive change. This includes improving soil health and water quality, increasing biological diversity, creating a healthy and safe work environment, providing nourishing and affordable food, and working towards a future that includes small farms and healthy communities.

What We Grow   We grow nearly everything that will possibly grow in our northern climate, plus some stuff that shouldn’t be found this far north. One of our basic tenets is diversity, and since a picture is worth more than words, take a quick tour to see what we have to offer. We also raise hogs and sheep, tap maples to make syrup, have a flock of laying hens, raise hay for livestock forage and straw for mulch, and produce compost to nourish our soil.

How We Grow It  We extend our short growing season through the use of high tunnels and row covers, produce our own transplant starts, and make extensive use of cover crops grown both for soil fertility and weed suppression. Farm work is accomplished by a wide assortment of hand tools and appropriate tractor implements.

Marketing   Like the rest of our operation, we strive for diversity in our marketing systems, allowing us to fill niches that we might otherwise miss. CSA is the cornerstone of our farm. We are also one of the largest local suppliers of produce to the Chequamegon Food Coop in Ashland, and supply area restaurants, Northland College, and Whole Foods Coop in Duluth as well.

Education   We have taught basic record keeping through the Lake Superior Farm Beginnings program, hosted Northland College interns and Growing Connections program on the farm, mentored new farmers through the MOSES Farmer to Farmer mentoring program, and host field days for local schools, youth groups and civic organizations. In 2014, HCFarm was recognized by the Lake Superior Bi-National Forum as a regional business leader within the Lake Superior basin.

An Employer of Choice   In all truth, we would not be successful without our talented farm staff. We are grateful for the hard work, energy, and good cheer brought to our farm each season by the many talented people who we have had the pleasure of working with and we hope we have given back as much as we have gained!

Farm Growth   As a business, we have experienced slow but steady growth, both in output and return. We have incorporated new systems while maintaining high quality control and our sense of whom and what we are.

Freshness you can taste,

grown by farmers you can trust!
