Hi, we’re Landis & Steven. We’ve been farming here at Hermit Creek near Lake Superiors south shore since 1993 with an aim to grow and deliver the very finest local organic produce using regenerative practices, pastured pork, and grass-fed lamb possible.
Whether you want food that tastes great, food that is good for you, or food that is good for our community, we’ve got you covered with CSA and wholesale serving Ashland, Washburn, and the entire Chequamegon Bay area as well as Duluth and Superior’s Twin Ports.
Take a look around. If what we’re doing here at Hermit Creek strikes a chord, consider joining us in promoting a better, saner food system.
We look forward to sharing our adventure in seasonal eating!
Know your Farmer!
Do you know where your food comes from?
We think it’s important to Know Your Farmer! To know who grows your food, where it is grown, and how it is grown. And that’s where Community Supported Agriculture or CSA comes in.
CSA is a partnership between you and your farmer, where we work together to build a food system that works for everyone. You have a direct relationship with your farmer, your food, and the land it’s grown on.
We have a wide variety of share types & seasons including Choice and Flex shares to help meet your busy schedule. And with delivery from Duluth to Ashland (including one-day shipping for meat shares across Minnesota and Wisconsin), we likely have a convenient delivery site near you!
So join us and get to Know Your Farmer!

The ultimate in local food!
real food that tastes of sun and rain and healthy soil
certified organic
When we started Hermit Creek Farm, we made an important decision for both ourselves and the folks we grow food for to farm using organic methods.
Food is a language spoken by every culture. The simple act of choosing organic is an act of both cultural and biological conservation. Organic methods are not the most efficient or easiest way to farm; it’s slower, more complex, and labor intensive. But for the sake of our earth’s long-term health, organic should be celebrated at every table, every day!
And we decided to go a step beyond USDA certification by joining the Real Organic Project. Started by farmers for farmers to protect the original meaning of organic, Real Organic remains exactly what organic was always intended to be. Food grown in the soil. Livestock raised on pasture.
Certified organic, real organic, grown by farmers you know near the shore of Lake Superior. It’s food you can trust!
Green grass & sunshine
Eating meat in todays world takes serious thought. Most is ill raised in uncaring animal factories and feed lots. And then there is the question of climate change; animals, especially ruminants, emit methane, a leading contributor to climate change. What to do? We balance all of this by asking “Do you know where your food comes from?”
At Hermit Creek, our animals are raised humanely on open pasture in a stress-free environment where pigs can be pigs and sheep can be sheep. And in turn, our animals help rejuvenate the soil as one part of an intricate crop rotation system. Plus, in a sense, we are producing protein out of sunshine on ground we otherwise likely wouldn’t farm and from plants we can’t directly eat.
Non-meat protein sources are many and varied. But where and how are they produced? Brazil is the worlds leader in soy production, grown largely on land that was once rainforest. The central valley of California is a major producer of nuts, grown in a veritable desert of pesticides, mined irrigation and exploited labor. The list goes on! Again, ask yourself, “Do you know where your food comes from?”
Green grass and sunshine. We believe you’ll notice the great taste and will feel good about your choice to support a gentler food system.
eating Seasonal, local & organic.
It’s the most personal way you can tackle climate change!
We strive to use regenerative farming practices which focus on soil and ecosystem health, improve on-farm biodiversity, water quality, and add resilience in an increasingly chaotic climate.
We like to say our primary “crops” are our soil and on-farm biodiversity. And if we do a good job, we get the side-benefit of the best tasting, healthiest produce and meat possible! Crop rotation, reduced tillage, cover cropping, planting native grasses, forbs, shrubs, and trees, rotational grazing, adding compost, home-grown manure, and minerals are all designed to improve our farms health. And your health too!
We believe you can taste our success!
