frequently asked csa ?’s
These are some of the most frequently asked questions about our CSA. If you can’t find answers to your questions here, please give us a call 715-492-5969.
What’s in the box? We typically have 8 to 12 items in each box and strive to make it a good mix of what’s in season including something leafy, something crunchy, something to eat right now, and something to cook later. We eat from the farm too so we strive to make each week great! To see what past CSA deliveries have included, check out What’s In the Box.
Do you offer customized shares? Yes. We were the first CSA in the Duluth-Ashland area to offer CSA customization. You can choose what you want in your share with our Choice shares or you can choose what days you want your share delivered with our Flex Plan share.
What is your CSA season? Depending on your share, our CSA begins in early June and continues on to early March.
Do you offer half-shares? Yes and no! We do not offer a share that is simply our standard share cut in half, but instead, have Every-Other-Week shares. You get a full CSA share delivered every-other-week.
When is your sign-up season? We begin annual sign-up in early January. Returning members as well as those who have inquired earlier are notified first and then we open the CSA to the general public.
How many people does a typical share feed? The answer likely depends on you and your eating habits. As a family of two, we eat 2+ shares-worth every week! But then, we work physically demanding jobs here on the farm and cook most meals from scratch. Not sure about your needs? Start with an every-other-week or Flex Plan share and if you find yourself wanting more, simply upgrade to a weekly share at any time.
Do you offer special payment plans? Yes. We know paying in a single lump sum is hard on the pocket book so we have several payment options when you pay by check (download our printable sign-up form which explains the payment options in full).
Where do you deliver? HCF has a wide delivery area from High Bridge to Bayfield to Duluth (and many points in-between). Click here for a full list. Don’t see a site near you, give us a call.
Do you offer home delivery? Yes, we have a Farm-to-Door option for CSA members living in Duluth-Superior and Ashland-Washburn. More information about our Farm-to-Door option can be found here.
Will you deliver to a business location for employees? Yes! We are very interested in developing partnerships with businesses to deliver CSA shares to groups of employees. Have your human resources folks get in contact with us. We will also come to your place of business and present to employees the benefits of CSA and local, organic food.
What if I can’t pick up my share or simply forgot? We ask that you be prompt in picking up your share. Our drop sites graciously offer space for delivery and we do not want to burden them (plus your veggies are simply better the fresher they are). If you can not pick up your share, please arrange for someone else to pick it up. If you simply forgot, check the drop site, it might still be there! Drop sites will dispose of the share in a manner they seem fit (we ask sites to hold your share for 24 hours). In general, we do not replace forgotten shares.
I’m at my drop site and I don’t have a share? Hopefully this never happens, but it does! First, check the delivery site check list. If your name is not on the list, you are likely there on the wrong day (this happens from time to time). Okay, your name is on the list but still no box. It is likely someone else picked up a box on the wrong day or we made a mistake either in delivery or packing (this is rare but does happen from time to time). Give us a call and we will work out a remedy.
I’m going on vacation. What happens to my CSA share? Everyone deserves a vacation and you shouldn’t have to miss a CSA delivery to take one. If we know far enough in advance (we ask for 7 days notice), we can rearrange a delivery when you return. Or you can have a friend pick up and enjoy your share while you are away (or check out our Flex Plan share, the perfect share for those planning on being out of town a lot).
Can I visit the farm? YES. We view this as your farm and you should stop by and see where your food is grown. We can’t always give tours (in truth, we work seven days a week) but the fields are free to wander. Visit the sheep and hogs, bring a picnic lunch… And we live in an area with lots to do (Copper Falls State Park, the North Country Trail, and Morgan Falls/St. Peters Dome hiking trail are all near by.
